What are email trackers and how can I block them with Firefox Relay?

Advertisers and third parties use email trackers to collect information about your interaction with marketing emails. Most of these trackers are hidden in links, images, or attachments contained in the body of the emails they send you. Trackers detect and tell the sender when or if an email was opened, as well as the user's email client and IP address. This information is typically used to measure the effectiveness of their marketing campaigns or to build a profile of you based on the content you engage with.

Set Relay to block known email trackers contained in forwarded emails and keep your activity private. To turn on this protection, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Relay icon in the toolbar.
  2. Click Manage all masks.
  3. In the Relay dashboard, click your user profile at the top right.
  4. Click Settings.
  5. Check the box next to Remove Email Trackers.
  6. Click Save.

If trackers are found on a forwarded email, you’ll see a notification at the top indicating the number of trackers blocked for that email. Click the Learn More link in the email header for additional information.

Note: Removing trackers may cause your email to look broken because they are often contained within images and links. Any emails you receive like this cannot be fixed or recovered. Disable this feature on your Relay account settings if you’re experiencing email breakage. Please be aware that changing this preference will affect all your masks.
