I reverted to 56 one day, used it. next day it was back to 57
Hello,
I updated to 57 and lost a great many of my addons I use, some which held info I could no longer access. So I installed the last version back over the newer one to make sure my info was kept. Looked perfect and used it all day. Today I woke up and its back to version 57
Could someone explain why it did this and how I might fix it?
Thank you! Nancy

There probably the settings in FF57 that you need to change so it doesn't update first reinstall FF56 back and go to the settings and make sure that the Auto update isn't checked and then choose don't Update option and save and this should keep it at FF56.
First, we don't support downgrades. Firefox 57 changes things in the profile that when you downgrade to 56 can cause Firefox to not work properly. On top of that, Firefox 56 is vulnerable to known security holes.
What add-ons do you need help finding replacements for?

It was SO different there was literally only a few things left on my bars.
These were the troubling ones: All in One Sidebar Tool which held Quicknote and Quickfox both FULL of info. I lost samfind which was FULL of very specific icons. That was a bar I kept right under my bookmark toolbar. I also had additional toolbar It's not that I'm don't want to upgrade but it was SO different. I needed to put it back so I could see the info I had lost on those apps I mentioned.
Screenshot of my 56 version shown. I tend to tweak a LOT. But it was becoming unusable due to slowness. I was going to clean up my addons but I need to retrieve a TON of info from the old version if it does not allow many of my addons. Plus find replacements
Can I install the two version in different folders? That way I can slowly set up the new one.

Ah... I'll try that as soon as it converts again. Thank you!

It does not work it is forced update.

Thank you for all the info. It's my tweaking addiction that gets me into trouble Ü I ran it in SAFE mode and it worked fine. So it is my excessive addons or at least one of them causing the issue of being virtually to slow to now use at 5.6 It's going to be a BIG project for me to set up the new one. I'm going to try to install one version in one place and one in another.... if that's possible so I can slowy work on it.
You can see the extent of my addon problem. Ü
- =} Yes, some take about 20megs each give or take x
So yes. There was a issue with 57 and the update to 57.0.1 fixed excessive memory use.
Do make sure please that the settings have been adjusted : Go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Help ? --> Troubleshooting Information Page and take a look in the Accessibility section if accessibility is set to "true" there. if yes, go to the Firefox 3 Bar Menu --> Options --> Privacy & Security panel and under Permissions check the setting to Prevent Accessibility Services from accessing your browser. Restart Firefox
If still issues you could lower the multiprocessor count : You could try this please : Go the Menu then Tools --> Options --> Performance and untick everything. change the recommended size lower then see how it runs. Note: 0 = No Multi-proccesor = slow again. Restart Firefox after making these changes please. Try 2 if have to.
Seems you have managed to turn back on Legacy addons. It is not recommended as will be a security risk as well can cause Firefox issues.
Please find alternatives from URL's in previous post and I will mention that with ability to change search providers from the search bar, there is no need for separate Ebay or Amazon search. fyi : AddThis, https://techcrunch.com/2016/01/05/oracle-addthis/
The Download Arrow can be stopped from being hid when not in use. You can always click the arrow and see what is going on with your download and open the folder where they are stored.
Many addons you were using were duplicates of things Firefox does. With the CSS you can change Firefox any way you want to, example : https://github.com/wilfredwee/photon-australis This happens to be using the Black Theme in Customize and the Developers Edition but can have rounded tabs back if want to.
So try to find replacements for the Legacy addons as soon as possible and to turn them off again.
Good luck and feel free to ask. Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

Try "installing" a portable version of Firefox 52.7 and syncing all your extensions and settings from 56 for the older version, and a clean install of 57.2 for the other. That way you'll have the latest stable supported version in both cases. This will give you until June 2018 to finish migrating to the Quantum version if it meets your needs.
I don't have any specific advice about SAMfind, Quicknote or Quickfox, but a customizing the new tab page (link in Pkshadow's reply) may be able to replace some of what you're used to seeing.
Modified
@Nancy, Also when you install there comes a package that is called 'install maintenance" option if you expressed install you will not see this and under custom you can cancel this install and that will also prevent Force Updates. I know this because I do custom FF install not express install to see what is loaded without my knowledge. I not got FF57 without the Service maintenance installer installed and unchecked the Updates and so FF57 won't do the update.
Modified
We do not suggest you stop updates. Running old versions of Firefox leaves you vulnerable to many known security bugs, as well as stuck using old web technology. It's bad for you and it's bad for the web to use old versions of web browsers.
I'm still working on this. I NEED to have TWO SEPARATE VERSIONS installed just until I get my info from 5.6 slowly pulled over to 5.7
I'm finding it tricky. Plus 5.7 doesn't seem to have a "custom install".... I'll get this figured out. It's just been a sink hole of time.
Thanks so much for everyone's input. I'm referring back to this regularly.
I'm going to start a new thread for this as it's now about installing two versions.
Just a totally untechnical thought - maybe, instead of wasting a shitload of time re-clogging your browser, you coud use the forced change to let go of everything that isn't vital...?

Yeah... I do have a problem "letting go". Ü
